Rajesh Salgaonkar
Rajesh Salgaonkar’s work emerges from his daily experiences in London, transforming ordinary observations into deeply immersive and introspective visual narratives. His practice is rooted in drawing as a continuous, instinctive process through which images, memories, and sensory impressions gradually take form. Rather than depicting direct representations, his works invite viewers into archetypal and psychological spaces shaped by ambiguity, stillness, and subtle emotion.
Salgaonkar’s drawings are marked by refined line work, restrained gestures, and an acute sensitivity to space. Negative space, shifting perspectives, and layered marks play a critical role in flattening or expanding pictorial depth, allowing forms to dissolve, reappear, or hover between abstraction and recognition. His use of colour is deliberate and experiential—often emerging from reflection, memory, and observation rather than literal translation—resulting in surfaces that feel both quiet and evocative.
In his watercolours, Salgaonkar explores themes of impermanence and perception through animals, birds, and landscapes rendered with luminous washes and tonal gradations. These works balance softness with precision, capturing fleeting moments while maintaining a contemplative stillness. Overall, his practice reflects a sustained inquiry into seeing, memory, and place, offering viewers a nuanced and poetic visual experience.
